28: Flooring and Cabinets

This Is Not The Right Order

Grumble… grumble… grumble.  The builder had the flooring people come in and put the flooring down.  The cabinets are not in, the painters aren’t finished, the electrician isn’t finished, etc.  Oh, I can see this is going to be a mess and the floors are going to be damaged.

We picked out our flooring from Home Depot because the place the builder sent us to didn’t have much of a selection.  We found a tile that almost matched our laminate choice, so we had that installed in the laundry room and both bathrooms.  It looks really good.  The laminate flooring turned out to be a great choice, now we’ll see how tough it really is as these subcontractors walk on it, drag stuff over it, drip paint on it, etc.  Article continues below…

The Cabinet People

Oh my gosh.  The people our builder hired to do the cabinets are bumbling buffoons IMO.  They came in a week or so ago and took measurements, today they are here to install and not much fits.  Take a look at this cabinet below, it covers half the window!!  They didn’t realize it was not right until they hoisted it up against the wall.  They had to remake this one and come back at a later date to install it.

Cabinets

These clowns severely damaged the wall trying to get their improperly measured cabinet into place.  Watching them install the cabinets was like watching a little baby trying to put the square peg into the round hole.  When it came time to put the island down, I had to tell them how to do it!  Thanks to the internet, I knew the proper way to do it… mounted directly on the concrete and bolted down.  We set the island in place, marked around it then cut out the flooring underneath it.  See, I told you the flooring shouldn’t have been put down yet.

Wall Damage

Are you kidding me?

After they FINALLY got all the cabinets in place, there we numerous gaps and misalignments.  I think we would have been better off buying the premade cabinets at Home Depot or Lowes.  When they mounted the door pulls for the cabinet doors, they made their jig wrong and every single one was crooked.  When they installed the pulls for all the drawers, every single one was crooked.  And when I opened up a drawer, look what I found!!  The absolute cheapest type of drawer glides.  When I pointed this out to the builder, he snarked at me saying “If you want a $500,000.00 house, you have to pay for a $500,000.00 house.”

Please.  What reputable builder uses this type of hardware?  None that I know of.  This will be fixed, one way or another.
